114 How Traveling Can Help Your Capoeira. Part II. Ft. Prof. Fogo

Have you ever wondered what do you get from traveling to Capoeira events?

In this part 2 of my conversation with my friend Prof. Fogo (@fogocapovam) we talked about the benefits of traveling to Capoeira events, it can give you so much experience and help grow your Capoeira exponentially!

Getting to play with people that you don’t see that often, will help your Capoeira knowledge, and as Prof Fogo said, when you teach it is very important that you visit other Capoeira events, you can see how others teach, not to copy but just to learn from other ways of teaching.

113 How Traveling Can Help Your Capoeira. Part I. Ft. Prof. Fogo

How much can we learn when we travel?

During this Part 1 conversation with my friend Prof. Fogo (@fogocapovam) we talk about how great it is to travel, from the very beginning, and how it helps those who are starting in Capoeira to get introduced to this awesome community!

As I have mentioned before, traveling is such a crucial factor in our Capoeira journey, it helps develop great relationships, great connections, great friendships, but it also helps us understand on a deeper level the Capoeira experience!

112 Palma de Bimba VS Palma de Terreiro. Ft. Prof. Congo and Prof. Soquete

How many times have we been in a Capoeira or Samba de Roda where we are using “Palma de Terreiro” and we fall back to “Palma de Bimba”?

Well pay attention and you will see how common this happens, these two ways of clapping in the Roda have their meanings and their specific ways of playing, especially “Palma de Terreiro” from Candomble to Samba de Roda, to many others within many cultural expressions in the Brazilian Culture.

In this episode my brothers Prof. Congo (@congo) and Prof. Spoquete (@Soquete) talked about what we know of these two specific claps, we also mention a third clap that is used in the roda, we talked about how the way we grew up gives so much influence to our understanding of rhythm!

111 Body Awareness in Capoeira. Ft. Tempestade

In this awesome conversation with Tempestade (@jessimateran) we talked about how much body awareness we need in Capoeira. Her expertise and experience come from personal training, yoga, and fitness her whole life, being around parents that were always in the fitness industry.

We talk about how important this is for us to prevent injuries through a correct form, how we as teachers need to be more informed and do a lot of research to be able to teach something proper to the person and prevent injuries in the long run.

Tempestade (@jessimateran) also offers consultation to anyone that wants to prevent injuries through training, ask her directly for more questions.

110 I Got Interviewed In My Own Show. Ft. Instra. Folha Saca and Caju – Part II

Listen to this episode where I explained how I learn from the roda.

Learning from the roda is such an awesome experience for all of us Capoeiristas, we can learn from watching or playing. I love analyzing other’s games to see how I can apply their ways to my own Capoeira game, engaging in the Capoeira game and getting to understand how it works can be very complex (but not hard) to understand, we just gotta watch a lot of games, and know what to look for. Every game is going to be different and we are not always attacking or in the famous phrase “boca de espera”.

What do I look for when I’m watching a Capoeira game?. I am looking for opportunities, I am looking at timing, directions or angles, when and how I can apply what I know in that game. This is not something that applies to every single game, but once you start looking for those details, you can understand how and where to get out in different scenarios.

Any question about the Capoeira game??… Hit me up with your questions, I will be very happy to help!!

Much love, Inst. Caxixi

109 I Got Interviewed In My Own Show. Ft. Instra. Folha Seca and Caju.

For the first time ever, I got interviewed in my own show!!, I was never expecting to get this interviewed a have a couple of friends curious about my own Capoeira journey.

It’s super cool to look back a tap a little bit into all the experiences that I have had a presence the last 20 years in Capoeira.

In this conversation my friend Instra. Folha Seca and Caju made me amazing questions, bringing me back to the very beginning, they ask about my first experiences with Capoeira, what I miss the most from my old Capoeira community in Venezuela, and so many awesome topics that I was not expecting at all!!!

108 Sacrifices Get Us Where We Want to Be

Anything we want to accomplish in life we are going to need to make sacrifices, even if we break it down we are making sacrifices every single day, we are just don’t see them consciously.

Normally we only see the results of the sacrifices, but we don’t really know what others had to sacrifices for them to be there and obtained the results we see. There are many successful people (whatever success means to you) that all I see is people saying how lucky they were to be where they are or just criticize them for the amount of success they have achieved. We all just see the result of the hard work today!

I have been sacrificing so many things not just for Capoeira, but also outside of Capoeira too, I had to sacrifice a lot of stuff for me to be able to be where I am today. It has been 20 years of many sacrifices for Capoeira for me to love, and feel really passionate about this, to the point that I wanted to make this podcast to share that passion with the world.

107 The Real Capoeira Is In The People. Ft. Graduado Arrepiado

It makes me so happy to get to know more friends in the Capoeira community, and get to support them by traveling to their events, bring some students with me, and bring energy to those rodas!!

In this episode I had the awesome pleasure to interview my friend Graduado Arrepiado (@capoeira.nago.mke/@danielinmke) where we talk about his journey from the very beginning in France all the way till now, we also talked about the new mentality of the newer generation of Capoeiristas that are breaking the old thinking of group rivalry, and are coming together to PLAY CAPOEIRA!!

In the same way, when I started Capoeira, there was a pretty dominant rivalry between our old Instructors and the Instructors and teachers from another group, but we, the newer generation broke that cycle and started to make a big difference in our Capoeira community!!

Listen more to this awesome episode Apple Podcast, Spotify, and all podcast platforms that you know!!!

Let’s make the difference TOGETHER!!

106 Lean Into What is Not Natural For You. Ft. Instra. Folha Seca

Sometimes to grow in Capoeira we need to practice where we are uncomfortable, even including traveling and supporting and connecting with our community. This was part of my conversation with my Friend Instra. Folha Seca.

During our conversation we also talked about their awesome idea of having a batizado on a Farm (you can watch the vlog of my trips to Madison, WI on my YouTube channel), coming up with creative ways to make events happen is our job as a teacher and provide that place for our students.

105 What Are The Connections Between Samba and Capoeira. Ft. Monitora Cigana

How much can we learn? How much do we know the connections of other Afro expressions in Brazil with Capoeira?

Learning is a life journey, we all can learn from many directions and from many recourses, as we get deep in our learnings we start to understand how everything is connected in and to Capoeira. During this episode I had the pleasure to interview my friend Monitora Cigana (@gocigana), we we talk some of the connections with Capoeira and Samba, we also talked about her journey of learning of Capoeira and Samba, how everything is connected in a ways that we don’t even realize.

We also talk about how many of the Afro expressions are connected in many other cultures, like tambor from Venezuela, how we there make circles to dance, sing, and honor our ancestors through the drums. So excited to learn more about this.

102 Part II – Capoeira In Israel, and The Capoeira Instructors Course Initiative. Ft. Mestre Edan.

What can we do as Capoeira Community in the US to adopt a system that works in another country?… As a huge and older Community, we could learn from other younger communities that have been growing very fast since they have been established. Mestre Edan has been educating over 200 Capoeira teachers and over 10,000 students; this is not about groups or Capoeira style, it is about a system in place that has been working since 1999 till now. What can we learn from them?

3 Pillars of a Good Capoeirista:

1 – The Academy: the place to learn and share, a safe place where you get to try things you can learn from your friends.

2 – Your Home: You practice in the academy, then you go home and you work hard so when you go back to the academy it is much better because everybody can learn from you.

3 – The World: You go out and search for stuff, you bring it to your home, you train it and then you bring it to the academy, so everybody goes home and trains.

100 Breaking Down The Capoeira Game. Ft. Mestre Mindinho

What is the Capoeira game? Have you ever been in a position where you had no idea what the Capoeira game actually looks like or how to understand it? Comment below!!

To celebrate my first 100th episode I had the awesome pleasure to interview my Mestre, Mestre Mindinho (@mindinhovalente), to talk about “The Capoeira Game”, the very first time I came across with Mestre Mindinho’s information, was with one of his videos where he was explaining the Capoeria game, what it is and how to understand it.

Let us know if you have questions about the Capoeira game and how it works.
Understanding the Capoeira game can get confusing when we are starting in Capoeira, but as Capoeira educators we should be able to explain this dynamic through words for those that have never seen Capoeira before or for those that are starting in this beautiful art.
