What can we do as Capoeira Community in the US to adopt a system that works in another country?… As a huge and older Community, we could learn from other younger communities that have been growing very fast since they have been established. Mestre Edan has been educating over 200 Capoeira teachers and over 10,000 students; this is not about groups or Capoeira style, it is about a system in place that has been working since 1999 till now. What can we learn from them?

3 Pillars of a Good Capoeirista:

1 – The Academy: the place to learn and share, a safe place where you get to try things you can learn from your friends.

2 – Your Home: You practice in the academy, then you go home and you work hard so when you go back to the academy it is much better because everybody can learn from you.

3 – The World: You go out and search for stuff, you bring it to your home, you train it and then you bring it to the academy, so everybody goes home and trains.

This conversation was very motivating and has a lot of great information. In this episode I had the amazing pleasure to interview Mestre Edan (@edan ) all the way from Israel, one of the Capoeira pioneers in Israel, using an awesome strategy to build a community, using some army tactics, “you build an army you start a school for officers because the officers are going to train the soldiers”.

This made Capoeira so big in Israel that now Capoeira gives a very hard time to Judo, everyone knows what Capoeira is, what can we learn from that? and How can we apply the same system here in the USA and make our Capoeira schools grow so big, that we can give hard times to another martial arts?

He also told us the story behind The Instructor Course (by the way, this course can be done by any level, not only instructors) and how he specializes in kids… Wait for Part II next week.

There are many many ways for us to connect with/to Capoeira, and here are a few examples:


Always show up to class, starting with your teacher, support 100% of your class by showing up, getting material from your teachers such as instruments, t-shirts, hats, pants, or any material provided by them.

Learning the history behind Capoeira, or ask your teacher to help with that.

Learn Brazilian culture or ask about it, which will give you a basic understanding of what Capoeira is today days. You will be surprised by how everything is connected.

Learn Instruments; I would repeat this so much, learn Berimbau (I’m going to do a follow up with my previous Berimbau episode), learn atabaque and pandeiro, those are the basics and essential for Capoeira!

And again I am going to keep saying this, learn Portuguese, that is going to give you so much understanding of this amazing art, trust me with this, you will be happy how much you can learn by understanding Portuguese!

I was wondering the other day, What does it take to be a good Instructor, then right after asking myself about that, my mind followed with this… Now, What does take to be a good student?… So I came up with all these 8 points.

But before digging into that, let’s define the word “Student”. I google it and this is what I found good for my personal understanding -and honesty I don’t remember the specific source, so don’t crucifix me for that.

Student(noun) a person engaged in study; one who is devoted to learning; a learner; a pupil; a scholar; especially, one who attends a school, or who seeks knowledge from professional teachers or from books; as, the students of an academy, a college, or a university; a medical student; a hard student.

Here are the points I think I like on a good student:

Positive Attitude
Listens
They follow instructions
Seeks improvement
Acepts teacher’s critics
Team player
Always shows up
They’re Involved

Personally I think drills and repetitions are so boring, but they are so crucial for our performance and capoeira game, if we don’t practice the drills then that can lead to bad performance in the capoeira game, including lack of distance, lack of timing and lack of good form. Drills and repetitions can help us improve in many aspects in our capoeira journey, including partner and music practice!… We are living the Internet era, where we get information in a matter of seconds, but when it comes to physical activities we want the same results and sometimes it gets us frustrated because we want results NOW!!… But we (including myself) can’t forget that practice is what capoeira is about. Here are just a few points I mentioned in this episode. What drills do you like to practice more?
