98 Part II – Don’t Take Capoeira as a Short Term. Ft. Prof. Bacana

Part II of my conversation with my brother Prof. Bacana (@prof_bacana_maculele_capoeira) is up on all the podcast platforms; in this second part, we talk about how he is trying to build an ego-free environment in his new gym because there are 3 different martial arts that are part of the business, we talk about how his Mestre is his inspirations to keep pushing himself, important is having a mentor in Capoeira, to help you grow and understand what we do, what it takes to be a Capoeirista from his perspective, and making Capoeira a long term activity so you can see for yourself the benefits of this amazing art.

Thank you so much for the inspiration Prof. Bacana, we will definitely visit you at your class!!

97 Part I – My Mestre Believes in Me. Ft. Prof. Bacana

It takes courage to open a gym or studio to start your Capoeira work, that is why I wanted to bring to you, my brother Prof. Bacana (@prof_bacana_maculele_capoeira) because when I met him at the Sua Casa event in Charlotte, NC, he told me the story of the opening of his gym during the pandemic, crazy right? But he did it, he works hard for it, and he still standing and expanding!!

I am always going to admire those that work smart and hard for what they want, those who put their actions to work and do not wait for others to do something or give it to them. I am always going to admire those who look for opportunities to learn and to grow.

Thank you so much for the inspiration Prof. Bacana, we will definitely visit you at your class!!

96 Part II – Correlation of African Dances, and Religion with Capoeira. Ft. Leopardo.

What you are going to listen toĀ part II of my conversation with Leopardo and the studies he’s done about Capoeira and African Culture.:

The religion of West Africa teaches you:
Ā – respect: to ancestors and our surroundings,
Ā – loving: people and our surroundings, and
Ā – care: for each other to prosper.

The conexions of Capoeira and Candomble.
We mentioned the actual Voodoo.
Ignorance creates a lot of hate anywhere.

I found it very interesting how everything is connected in Capoeira, there are so many little pieces of everything in Capoeira, From African culture to Brazilian culture.

Today Capoeira has conquered the heart of thousands of people around the world (I’m sure we can even say millions of people). There is Capoeira anywhere in the world, letting you know that Capoeira is about people, not where you are from, what you speak, how you look like, or what Capoeira style you do. But something I can tell you for sure, once Capoeira touches your heart, I promise, you are gonna love it!

When I got my very first ceremony in the Yoruba religion I learn so much about how much you need to respect people. They taught me that the heart of the religion is people, without people there is no energy, and without the energy, there is nothing to love.

95 Part 1 – How Orixas and Capoeira Are Connected. Ft. Leopardo

In this episode, I had the awesome pleasure to interview my friend Leopardo (@charlie_billon) which has been doing and continues doing researches about the connections of the African culture with our Capoeira, from the cultures to the dances, to the religions in African countries!!ā€¦ Everything is connected at the end.

Listen to this episode to get some information about the connection of our ancestors with today’s rituals in Capoeira.

for the last few months, I have seen people talking about ancestors, but in reality, we are not getting connected with them, we are getting so trapped in the social media world that we are forgetting about doing our homework. The best way to get connected, and also respect our ancestors is to learn from them, read about them, see their stories, not focus on they had suffered, but on what amazing stuff they left us, such as religions, culture, respect, and love for each other, our elderly and ancestors. That is what they left us, those that once were here with us.

94 We Cannot be Ashamed of Money. Ft. Inst. Caxixi

What would it happen if Mestre Pastinha received the monetary value he deserved, with all his knowledge and all his contribution to the Capoeira history? He probably wouldn’t go in such bad living conditions, sadly he got more value after he was gone.

Mestre Pastinha was one of the biggest pioneers of Capoeira in Brazil, he did many researches, including traveling all the way to Africa looking for answers.

We in the Capoeira community should not be ashamed to talk about money, wanting to make a living with what we love, to sustain our lives and families with what we dedicate so much time, energy, sweat, smiles, and sometimes tears. It should not be hard for us to make a living with Capoeira.

We, the teachers should have at least a basic understanding of financial education, what is actually a liability and asset, and much more. let’s get educated about money, so we can provide higher quality classes to our students and community, but also provide for our families with what we love doing!!

91 Capoeira and I Got Reconnected. Ft. Puma Camille

Have you ever imagine that Capoeira was already part of yourself?, and when you found Capoeira you felt that this was actually a reconnection?

Many of us felt that way when we started Capoeira, long after years is when we understand that connection.

On episode #91, I got the huge pleasure to interview Puma Camille (@puma) where we talk about that connection he had with Capoeira from the very beginning, where we talk about the connection beyond the physical body and objects that surround us and Capoeira, how we need to stay connected to our ancestors and how we are opening our eyes to new realities.

List to this interview and get to know for yourself the passion that Puma Camille shows us on Social Media!

90 Being Available to Explain Capoeira From Different Ways. Ft. Monitor Peruca

We all learn in different ways, some of us are slow learners (like myself) or some are fast learners, some of us are visual (like me) and some of us are theoretical, we also can be hands-on and learn from the experience rather from the books (like myself).

We can be excellent at whatever we do, but recreating that in other people, with different ways of learning is a WAY different story, know how to teach, know how to control your emotions during the class, and know how to explain what you are passing is not an easy task, it is something that takes time, a lot of practice and a lot of experience to create an excellent class, and of course, every teacher has a way of teaching, but we gotta know how to bring all the students up, with lacking the empathy of having a good Capoeirista in and out of Capoeira.

During this episode, I got the amazing pleasure to interview an old friend from Venezuela, Monitor Peruca (@juan), a friend that came from the exact same Capoeira community that I am from. During this interview, we talked about his Capoeira Experience between both countries, how he views teaching, and the coming up event “Sua Casa” organized by him and his team, an awesome event which will have many aspects, Afro-Venezuelan drums, free beginners class, a percussion workshop, dance workshop, a lot of Capoeira workshops and Batizado!!

We all are ready to travel and play Capoeira, reconnect with old friends and make a lot more new friends, who else is ready to travel?

89 Learning How To Approach Different Teaching Strategies – Instructor Course. Ft. Mestre Cueca.

Mestre Cueca (@cueca) and his team offer online courses that help you understand different ways of teaching, they give you tools and more knowledge so we, teachers, can apply that in our classes, helping us approach Capoeira in a very professional perspective when it comes to teaching. This course is for Instructors but also for people that want to help their teachers grow their schools. Check it out!

Just to you know, this course is not about a group or group methodology, the purpose of this course is to help you understand teaching techniques, which is an excellent tool not very common in Capoeira!

Teaching is not easy at all, it can be intimidating at the beginning, and sometimes overwhelming especially when you don’t know what and how to teach next (there’s no school or college program that teaches us how to teach Capoeira, if there is one, let me know).

This was an awesome pleasure since we need more of this kind of material, and you can support this type of work easily.

85 Self-Motivation, How to Keep The Fire. Ft Caxixi

Keeping my mind focus on where I want to keep me motivated, connecting with the Capoeira community through this podcast, and in person keeps me motivated!!

I was really closed to stop teaching classes, but I changed my mind after my last trip to Fortaleza, Brazil, I had the opportunity to meet amazing Capoeiristas, and also watch them playing in the roda!! Amazing Capoeiristas there!!!! Till I had the chance to have a conversation with one of them, where we talked about finding your own motivation when there’s little to non-Capoeira in your city, where you have to travel far to find a Capoeira class.

I will never forget this conversation because I told him how difficult it was for me to keep my motivation back then, which he responded “Caxixi, I’ve been there, and I know how you feel, so here is my advice for you, YOU HAVE TO WIN THE WAR IN YOUR HEAD, because if you win that war, you will find the fire and keep it”…

So today I want to tell you the same, and you want to quit Capoeira, if one day you lose your motivation, listen to me and WIN THE WAR IN YOUR HEAD!!!… Don’t quit!!!

84 Voice Warm-Up Tips For Singing in Roda, Music is The Foundation of The Roda. Ft. Instrutora Faisca.

In this episode, I had the pleasure to interview @julia.faisca, where we talked about the importance of Capoeira music in the roda, but we also talked about some tips of how to warm up your voice and how to take care of it, before, during, after the roda and even after the roda. During the interview, we also talked about how creating music is the collab of many people around us, and here is something important: singing in the roda is carrying the responsibility of setting up the energy of the roda!, but is also up to all of us standing in the roda to keep that energy through our voice, our claps, and our presence.

She also mentioned awesome tips to learn and get inspiration from any type of Brazilian music. She wanted to share her Spotify playlist of Brazilian music (I went through this playlist myself and it is awesome all this music):

83 How To Fix Your CabaƧas. Ft. Aroeira

In this episode, I had the pleasure to talk to Aoeira ( @aroeiracapoeira ) all the way from Texas, where he walks me through how he fixes and currently fixing some cabaƧas. You won’t believe how broken those cabaƧas were till he shows you how they were before.

You can also support his skills in fixing cabaƧas, go give him a follow, and talk to him here ( @aroeiracapoeira ) about fixing your cabaƧas.

If you own a Berimbau, or even if you not, you know that watching a cabaƧa getting completely unusable, hurts so much, especially if that the only Berimbau you have, sometimes those cabaƧas can be completely broken, either in half, or a small crack, or even worse than thatā€¦ broken in little pieces!!ā€¦

The first thought is “well I lost my cabaƧa, so I’m gonna throw this cabaƧa away and one day gets a new one”. I have been there many times.

I have dropped cabaƧa before, I have seen many scenarios, but in the end, they all are painful to see!

82 UNIFY – When We Are United We Can Accomplish A Lot More. Ft. Mestre Ferradura – PART II

Mestre Ferradura (@ferradura_capoeira) has amazing work that has been helping many people, from kids to the homeless to Capoeira teachers! Creating a huge impact in the community. This happens thanks to the mentality on UNITY!!… Unity is not about group, much less Capoeira style, it goes beyond that, it more accepting the different way of thinking, and believes, it is about coming together and understanding that we all here to enjoy the common ground, CAPOEIRA!

I’ve seen it myself, when ALL Capoeiras work with one single purpose, which is benefit our communities through Capoeira and respecting others, the growth that Capoeira has as a community itself, is massive!!… Capoeira in Venezuela grew huge because we all work together to help each other.

If unity becomes just for the benefit of a few, instead of the whole, or when “unity” is use for a selective few in a selective circle, then it is not unity anymore, it becomes exclusivity!

81 Working United to Make an Impact in Communities with Capoeira. Ft. Mestre Ferradura

Mestre Ferradura (@ferradura) has amazing work in person and online (check all the links below). He has been helping many people in Brazil, including the homeless, and hundreds of children from economically disadvantaged.

Mestre Ferradura is pedagogue, president of the Brazilian Institute of Capoeira-Education and director of the Project Brincadeira de Angola.

During this conversation with Mestre Ferradura, we talk a little about his Capoeira story, about how and why he put his work together, with many Capoeiristas around his city, focusing more on the person and Capoeira itself, without looking for Capoeira groups, no Capoeira styles, only Capoeira!

When we actually work united as a Capoeira community, we can really create a huge impact in our local communities, helping each other, and collaborating, forgetting about the group, Capoeira styles, and even Capoeira levels. I have seen it myself, and I can honestly tell you that Capoeira grows and helps so many people when we are actually together, not saying it in a social media post, but actually supporting and be there for each other!

79 We Don’t Own Our Students and Spirituality in Capoeira

Hey… Let’s share your Capoeira Experience!… I want to learn from you, I want to learn from your Capoeira Experience!… Yes, it does not matter how long you have been doing Capoeira, contact me and let’s share with the community!

Now back to this episode, lol.

During all these years in Capoeira, I have seen -and if you have been around long enough, I am sure you have too, a lot of people, either, switching groups (like myself), switching supervision (like myself), or quitting Capoeira (not like myself lol)… But all this is for a reason, sometimes we just lose our north, or sometimes we lose motivation, or sometimes… We just don’t feel quite there, ya know?!

But once we find what where we want to go, and what we need to do (and sacrifice) to get where we want to be, we can find that group, or person that can guide us, or mentor us.

SPIRITUALITY: just a heads up here, when I talk about this subject, I am not referring to a religion, nor god(s). I am referring to a internal and deep connection within yourself. We all are spiritual being that are in this borrowed body for a limited time. As I have done myself, we can make that connection with that internal spirit with Capoeira, specifically with Capoeira music.

BONUS: I will bringing to the podcast, an guess that will have a lot of Capoeira knowledge about History, Ritual in Capoeira, and Music… Listen to this episode, and DM me any questions that you might have for this guest, either here or my personal IG: @harly_m
